Meant to Be

This is a recent poem I wrote (holy crap, I actually like it…), and I’ll be performing it at the Women’s Project Poetry Slam next Tuesday (Nov. 13th) at the Coffeehouse in Normal, IL. If you’re in town, stop by and see us.

Also, this is reposted from my account on ThisIsBy.Us. If you like it, please register for an account, and vote for my post/comment on it. My username is SlytherinPrefect, you can just search for me on the site. Thanks.

Meant to Be

Why is it hard to be what I am?
Are you listening to me?
Do you hear the paradox of my life?
Of our lives?

I fight myself,
Fight the parts of me,
The parts I can’t let go,
Of who I’m meant to be.

Won’t let it grow.
Won’t let you see.
The parts I can’t shake off,
Of who I’m meant to be.

Not calm enough,
That isn’t me.
The stress, I can’t deny,
It’s who I’m meant to be.

And broken self
Is all I see.
She’s in the mirror,
That “who” I’m meant to be.

But I can’t see her,
That her without a he.
I’m terrified of her,
Is that who I’m meant to be?

Where does she go,
This other half of we?
Does she love herself,
This “who” I’m meant to be?

Is she still selfish?
Does she know how to be free?
Will she make her own choices?
Is she who I’m meant to be?

Why don’t I know her?
She ought to be in me.
Where do I look to find her,
The “who” I’m meant to be?

She isn’t very far,
If I’d only let her be.
She’s growing right inside me,
The me I’m meant to be.

If I’d just stop fighting,
Let the parts out,
Are you listening to me?
Let you be…me.

Wish I could be there next Tuesday but work has me tied down pretty well… I don’t get any paid vacation till the new year ;).
