Why I am as smart as I am:
Posted in Life, Television on 01/05/2006 09:58 pm by KatieKids’ shows back in my day were not as dumbed-down as they are now. For example, in the episode of “Fraggle Rock” I’m watching right now (called “Gobo’s Discovery”), Red Fraggle just said, “Oh, come off it, Gobo, everyone’s got problems.” Not to mention the numerous instances of discussions about death in the past few episodes. In fact, Gobo got trapped under a piece of wood and knocked unconscious, and mumbled in his half-lucid state, “Uncle Matt. I’m scared, Uncle Matt. Sing me a song, please Uncle Matt, please!” and Red and Boober, trying to free Gobo from the piece of wood, sang the song Gobo’s uncle Matt used to sing to him, cuing a flashback to baby Gobo and Uncle Matt (and subsequently, baby Junior Gorg and King Gorg, who apparently used to sing the same song when Junior was young). Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but Barney never struck me as being that touching. Poor Gobo, calling for his Uncle Matt. *sniffle* *snifflesniffle*
Yes, I’m a nerd.
Anyway, Fraggle Rock was a smart kids’ show. In the episode “The Minstrels” that I just watched the other day, Jim Henson (as Cantus the Minstrel) delivered some of the most thought-provoking dialogue I’ve ever heard in children’s television. And Boober used the word “coup”. That just bowls me over.

Yep. Fraggle Rock was quality television. Certainly a whole lot better than its modern replacements. The generation of tomorrow is lucky to have so much of our childhood on DVD.
’cause their stuff blows.

Fraggle Rock is seen as the view of communism at the time translated into a children’s show.
